ENCINITAS, San Diego County — A replacement playground and adult exercise equipment remain in the plans for Glen Park at 2149 Orinda Drive in Cardiff-by-the-Sea, but Encinitas has not announced a definite construction start date.
The city’s project-status page, updated August 12, 2026, says final design and permitting were completed in fall 2025. It also explicitly states that additional funding is needed for construction. The city therefore has a designed project, not a completed playground renovation.
What the proposed changes include
Planned upgrades would separate play areas for ages two through five and five through twelve, replace aging swings and worn ground surfaces, and replace sand and rubberized surfaces with engineered wood-fiber mulch. The approved concept also repurposes a horseshoe area for adult fitness equipment.
The project grew out of city concerns that maintenance alone could not keep equipment in service indefinitely. Residents took part in a neighborhood meeting in December 2024, and the Parks and Recreation Commission reviewed the design in April 2025.
For families, the main unanswered question is when construction funding will be secured and how any future work might affect park access. The official project page lists no guaranteed construction timeline, so visitors should not assume the play area is already rebuilt or closed for construction.
